At Heart Teaching, we work with schools and children every day, and one thing is always clear: when children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) get the right support, they thrive 🌱💡.
That’s why the news that around 250,000 pupils in mainstream schools could lose their legal right to extra help has hit educators hard 💔.
💬 What’s Actually Changing?
The government is considering changes to how SEND support is provided. The concern is that many pupils who currently have a legal guarantee for tailored support could be left without it 🚫.
Instead of being protected by law, they might be left to rely on whatever their school can offer—with no guarantee that it will be enough 📉.
❗ Why This Matters
For many children, the right help isn’t a bonus—it’s the difference between:
🧠 Coping and falling behind
👀 Feeling seen and feeling invisible
Without legal backing, schools (which are already stretched thin) may struggle to provide the support these pupils need—things like:
👩🏫 Teaching assistants
🤝 One-on-one support
📚 Specialist resources
This isn’t just about learning—it’s about mental health 🧠, confidence 🌟, and belonging ❤️.
🌍 Real Inclusion Needs Real Support
We all want an inclusive education system. But real inclusion isn’t just about being in the same classroom 🏫—it’s about making sure every child can participate and make progress in their own way 🧩.
Without the right support, “inclusion” becomes just a word—not a reality.
🙋 What Can We Do?
We can’t fix this overnight, but we can raise our voices 📣:
👪 If you’re a parent: Ask questions, speak to your school’s SENCO, write to your MP ✉️. Your voice matters.
👩🏫 If you’re a teacher or TA: Keep advocating for your pupils, share your experiences, and work together 💪.
🎓 If you’re in school leadership: Push for the support your pupils need. Build partnerships. Speak up where it counts.
🤝 If you’re anyone else: Listen. Learn. And stand with the families affected.
