Looking for a simple way to improve learning, focus, and memory?
The PQRST method is a proven study strategy that helps students understand and retain information more effectively — and it’s especially useful in both mainstream and SEN classrooms.
At Heart Teaching, we’re always exploring strategies to help learners succeed. Let’s break down the PQRST method and explore how you can use it in your classroom.
What Is the PQRST Study Method?
PQRST is a five-step strategy that stands for:
-
P – Preview
-
Q – Question
-
R – Read
-
S – Summarise
-
T – Test
Each step guides students through a structured way of processing and remembering new information — especially when reading textbooks or revising for exams.
How Does Each Step Work?
🟦 1. Preview
Skim the material first. Look at headings, subheadings, images, or key terms. This gives students a general idea of what they’ll be learning.
🟨 2. Question
Turn headings or subheadings into questions. This sparks curiosity and gives students a clear purpose while reading.
Example: “The Water Cycle” becomes “What are the main stages of the water cycle?”
🟩 3. Read
Now read the content carefully to find answers to the questions. Encourage highlighting key points or taking notes.
🟧 4. Summarise
Ask students to put what they’ve learned into their own words. This could be a short paragraph, a mind map, or a verbal summary.
🟥 5. Test
Finish by testing their understanding. This could be through quiz questions, flashcards, peer discussion, or a quick recap session.
Why Is PQRST So Useful?
The PQRST method supports many key aspects of learning:
✅ Improves focus and attention
✅ Boosts comprehension and retention
✅ Helps with information recall in exams
✅ Encourages active, independent learning
✅ Flexible for different subjects and ability levels
It’s also easy to scaffold for SEN learners, offering clear steps and reducing cognitive overload.
Using PQRST in the Classroom
-
Model the steps with the whole class before assigning tasks
-
Use visual aids or step-by-step worksheets
-
Let students work in pairs to discuss and summarise
-
Adapt it for audio learners using read-aloud and verbal summaries
-
Use it across subjects: history, science, geography, and even maths problems
Final Thoughts
